    In Rome consolation is both a social rite and a form of utterance. An exchange of words within the frame of consolation can be analysed in conversational terms. A consolation is a negotiation whose aim is that, thanks to the consoler, the consoled may be reintegrated in the community from which mourning has severed him. When transferred on the stage, a consolatory exchange is embedded in the theatrical utterance, thus losing its specific dynamics which is replaced by the dynamics of the stage imposed by the theatrical code. This is why Roman theatre quite often uses consolations that fail.

    La consolation est à Rome un rituel social et un mode d'énonciation. Un échange de paroles dans le cadre de la consolation est analysable en termes conversationnels. Une consolation est une négociation dont le but est que le consolé, grâce au consolant, réintègre la société dont il était coupé par son deuil. Transposé sur scène, un échange consolatoire est intégré à l'énonciation théâtrale et ainsi perd sa dynamique propre qui est remplacée par la dynamique de la scène, imposée par le code spectaculaire. C'est pourquoi bien souvent le théâtre romain utilise des consolations qui échouent.
