Resumen de La dynamique de la grammaire grecque dans l'Antiquité à la lumière des papyrus grammaticaux: "technè" et "empeiria"

  Starting from a methodological conception which replaces Greek grammar in the frame of the educational curriculum of Antiquity and which takes into account the dynamics of the evolution of grammar - in its relationship with philosophical and rhetorical doctrines -, the authors examine the status of Dionysius Thrax's Technè grammatikè, and the relation of this text to the corpus of grammatical papyri containing (sections of) technai. The analysis of the papyri (covering a period extending from the first to the fifth century A.D.), based on their structure, their terminology and their corpus of examples, makes it possible, in the first place, to define grammatical technography as an "open" and flexible genre, which lends itself easily to additions, cuts, elaboration of particular issues, and to variation of the examples given. This methodological stand allows the authors to take up the controversy over the authenticity of the Technè in a new light, both (a) from the point of view of the facts: the corpus of papyri does not give any indication that the best comparanda for the Technè can be found only in the third or fourth century A.D., nor does the documentation show a gradual doctrinal convergence of the papyri with the Téchnè;

  (b) from the point of view of method: we certainly have to reckon with the fact that a model-téchne must have existed in the first century A.D., and even before that; but, at the same time, we must accept that this model never functioned as the exclusively used manual for teaching purposes. In addition, if we want to situate a text in the history of Greek grammar, we should avoid a static view: grammatical knowledge in Antiquity, adapting itself to the needs of pedagogy, is characterized by the coexistence of innovation and of conservative or even obsolete opinions.

  Finally, one should be aware of the particular status of authors, of texts, of quotations, in sum of the entire scholarly culture in Antiquity.

  Partant d'une conception méthodologique qui replace la grammaire grecque dans l'ensemble du curriculum éducatif dans l'Antiquité et qui fait justice à sa dynamique évolutive - en rapport avec des courants philosophiques et rhétoriques -, les auteurs examinent le statut de la Technè grammatikè de Denys le Thrace, et le rapport de ce texte avec le corpus de papyrus grammaticaux contenant des (sections de) technai. L'analyse des papyrus (qui s'échelonnent sur une vaste période, du premier au cinquième siècle ap. J.-c.), à partir de leur structure, de leur terminologie et de leur corpus d'exemples, permet d'abord de définir la technographie grammaticale comme un genre ouvert et flexible, se prêtant facilement à des ajouts ou des suppressions, à des élaborations de points de doctrine, à la variation dans l'exemplification. Cette position méthodologique permet d'envisager la fameuse controverse autour de l'authenticité de la Téchnè sous une lumière nouvelle:

  (a) factuellement: le corpus des papyrus n'indique pas du tout que les meilleurs comparanda pour la Technè ne se rencontrent qu'aux 3e et 4e siècles ap. J.-C., et la documentation ne nous fournit pas, dans la mesure ou l'on avance dans le temps, une convergence doctrinale de plus en plus nette avec la Technè;

  (b) méthodologiquement: il faut certainement tenir compte du fait qu'une techne-modèle a dû exister des le premier siècle ap. J.-C., et même avant; mais en même temps, il faut admettre que ce modèle n'a pas été le seul manuel standard pour l'enseignement. De plus, pour situer un texte dans l'histoire de la grammaire grecque, il faut éviter d'adopter une visée statique: le savoir grammatical antique, se pliant aux nécessités de l'enseignement, est caractérisé par la coexistence d'innovations et de points de vue conservateurs ou dépassés.

  Enfin, il faut tenir compte du statut particulier de l'auteur, des textes, des citations, bref de la culture scientifique dans l'Antiquité.
