    The four riders, in the Revelation of John, refer to one of the "night Visions" to be found in Proto-Zechariah, but their colours and attributes clearly relate back to an Indo-European pattern, which Dumézil labelled as a three-functional pattern, to which some scolars propose to add a fourth function. This famous passage then can be looked upon as one devised by the author out of data borrowed from Iran. Such a borrowing is to be replaced within the current of exchanges that fared between Jewish-Christian traditions and Indo-European ones, a process that partly led to the development of apocalyptic trends.

    Les quatre cavaliers de l'Apocalypse de Jean font référence à l'une des "visons nocturnes" du Proto-Zacharie; mais les couleurs et les attributs renvoient très nettement à un schéma indo-européen, celui des trois fonctions duméziliennes, auxquelles certains proposent d'ajouter une quatrième. On peut donc considérer ce célèbre passage comme une création de l'auteur à partir d'une donnée empruntée à l'Iran. Cet emprunt est à replacer au sein des échanges entre traditions judéo-chrétiennes et indo-européennes, processus en partie responsable du développement de l'apocalyptique.
