This article focuses on the relation between ethnic groups viewed by the gender bias. Whereas Spanish women - separated themselves from the criollas - helped to maintain the social and racial hierarchy of the colony, the Indian and mestizo women contributed to form a new society. They organized the Spanish or criollo household favoring thereby the acculturation of the Spaniards to Mexican culture. Furthermore this article outlines the active part of women in obtaining their right by pleading at canonic and viceregal courts v. gr. to legitimize their illegitime children or against mistreatrnents.
