El artículo pone en relación la arquitectura de las ciudades mayas, sus características formales y su simbolismo, con la determinación del nivel estatal y con los patrones de poder en la evolución de la sociedad. Se toma como ejemplo básico Oxkintok, un lugar en el que se han llevado a cabo excavaciones arqueológicas en los últimos veinte años.

This article searchs the relationships between the architecture of the Maya cities, their formal characteristics and symbolism, and the notion of state in the patterns of cultural and political evolution. The model is the site of Oxkintok, where the archaeological excavations is performed in the last twenty years.
