    En los últimos años, Chile y Venezuela gastaron más recursos en armas que ningún otro país sudamericano. Esto se debe a la fuerte presencia de los militares en el gobierno de Hugo Chávez y al rol protagónico que siguen jugando las Fuerzas Armadas en Chile, pero también a la bonanza económica derivada del incremento del precio internacional del petróleo y el cobre. Además de generar desequilibrios con las naciones vecinas, el rearme convierte a ambos países en modelos opuestos en cuanto a sus políticas de defensa: el fortalecimiento militar chileno es posible gracias a la relación de confianza con Estados Unidos, mientras que el de Venezuela se produce en abierto desafío a la superpotencia

    In recent years, Chile and Venezuela have spent more on armaments than any other South American country. This is the result of the marked presence of the military in the Chávez government and the continued influence of the military in Chile, although it also reflects the economic boom derived from the increase in international prices for oil and copper. Apart from the fact that both provoke a lack of equilibrium with their respective neighbors, the rearmament is based on quite different defense policies: in the Chilean case, it is possible as a result of the close relationship with the United States, while in Venezuela it represents a clear challenge to the northern Super Power.
