    What classificatory system and criteria do city-dwellers, specifically the inhabitants of the 13th arrondissement in Paris, use to divide urban space? What resources do they tap? What “landmarks” bear meaning to them? Some of the units they distinguish have an administrative or historic origin; others arise out of their knowledge of the streets. For most inhabitants, the arrondissement is a major unit of inclusion whereas the quarter is a virtual reality more appreciated for its potential than for what actually happens there.

    Il s’agit ici de comprendre la manière dont les citadins d’une grande ville (spécifiquement les habitants du XIIIe arrondissement de Paris) divisent l’espace urbain et selon quel régime classificatoire. Quels critères retiennent leur attention, quels éléments font sens ? De quelles ressources disposent-ils pour ce faire ? Parmi les entités qu’ils distinguent, certaines ont une origine administrative ou historique, d’autres sont construites à partir de leur connaissance du terrain. L’arrondissement apparaît comme l’entité d’inclusion principale pour une majorité d’habitants, tandis que le quartier, plus apprécié pour ses potentialités que par ce qui s’y passe réellement, s’apparente à une réalité virtuelle.
