    African women, though they have been almost paralyzed by tradition and victims of male repression in the past, now have greater awareness of their social, economic and political strength. They are increasingly aware of themselves as subjects of their own history and indispensable actors in the development of Africa. In Senegal, for example, this awareness is based upon solidarity among women and creativity in the search for appropriate solutions to the problem offamily survival. Apart from the existence of sorne theoretical approaches (IFD, Integration of the women in the development ; GED, Gender and development), various informal organizations have emerged to support the initiatives of African women. The tontines and other similar initiatives should be seen in this light. However, there is an imbalance between the success of African women in the economic field and their representation in the field of politics. Apart from the fact that conscientization work has many facets and involves a long haul, this imbalance shows the need for a convergence of the different social movements, especially those concerned with women's activities.

    Ankylosées par la tradition ou victimes de la répression masculine, les femmes africaines ont davantage conscience de leur force sociale, économique et politique. De plus en plus, elles s' affirment comme «su jet» de leur histoire et actrices incontournables du développement du continent africain. Au Sénégal, par exemple, une tell e prise de conscience s' est réalisée sur base de l' esprit de solidarité entre femmes et de la créativité dans la recherche de solutions adéquates aux questions de survie familiale. Au-delà de l 'apparition de courants théoriques divers, tels que l'Intégration des femmes au développement (IFD) et le Genre et développement (GED), différentes organisations informelles ont vu le jour pour seconder l' effort des femmes africaines. Les tontines et autres initiatives semblables ont ici leur explication. Par ailleurs, il convient de signaler l'absence d'équilibre entre le succes avéré des femmes africaines sur le plan économique et leur faible insertion dans le champ politique. Plus qu'un rappel du fait que le travail de conscientisation est une oeuvre multidimensionnelle et de longue haleine, un te! déséquilibre met en lumiere la nécessité de convergence des différents mouvements sociaux, en particulier ceux concemés par l'action féminine
