Que Schopenhauer constituya la referencia filosófica central de Freud es algo que se constata a lo largo de la obra del fundador del psicoanálisis, particularmente en lo relativo al desalojo del cogito de su lugar central en la determinación humana. A partir de la necesaria diferenciación entre el inconciente schopenhaueriano, pensado como el atributo más primitivo y originario de la Voluntad, y el inconciente freudiano, que plantea una dimensión de lo psíquico irreductible a la conciencia, el presente artículo sitúa lo esencial del debate de Freud con el Schopenhauer en torno a El malestar en la cultura. Uno y otro destacan el carácter esencialmente negativo de la felicidad, sobre el telón de fondo, explícito, de una concepción del deseo humano como carencia.

That Schopenhauer is Freud's central philosophical reference is something that shows throughoutthe works of the founder of psychoanalysis, particulary in those regarding the displacement of the cogito from its central placing in human determination.
From the necessary differentiation between the schopenhauerian unconscious, conceived as the Will's most primitive and original attribute, and the freudian unconscious, which opens a psychic dimension irreductible to consciousness —the subject being where its effects cake place, fundamentally ignoring their cause—, this article presents the essentials of Freud's debate with the philosopher, in regard to Civilization and its discontent: both emphasize the essentially negative character of happiness, on the explicit background of human desire as want.
