La Ampliación del Museo del Prado se entiende como un nuevo capítulo en su ya larga vida. El nuevo proyecto contempla un eje conductor que nos lleva desde el pórtico del Paseo del Prado al Claustro de los Jerónimos, liberando las galerías del edificio de Villanueva para las colecciones permanentes. Un espacio trapezoidal, en la espalda del Museo, hace de papel mediador entre los distintos niveles en que se producen los accesos y desde él se accede al nuevo auditorio y a las dos salas de las exposiciones temporales. Sobre esta estructura se alza el Claustro, considerado como el elemento arquitectónico que da razón a todo lo que se construye a su alrededor. Finalmente la nueva ampliación ha transformado el entorno del Museo que queda envuelto en un manto verde al incorporar la terraza ajardinada que relaciona todo el conjunto con el Retiro, con el Paseo del Prado y con el vecino Jardín Botánico.

The new wing to the Prado Museum has to be seen as a new chapter in the very long life of the museum. The new project considers a transversal axis running from the portal on the Paseo del Prado side to the Cloister of Los Jerónimos which frees the galleries in the original Villanueva building for the exhibition of permanent collections. A trapezoidal area at the back of the museum serves as a concourse between the different access levels and one leading on to the new auditorium and the two temporary exhibition rooms. The cloister rises up above this structure, this being considered as the architectural element justifying all that constructed around it. The new wing has transformed the area of the Museum, which is now surrounded by greenery on the incorporation of a gardened terrace and which serves as a nexus between the entire museum complex and the nearby Retiro Park, the Paseo de Prado and the neighbouring Botanical Gardens.
