Con el presente artículo pretendemos contribuir al conocimiento de la relación que hubo en la Galicia del último tercio del siglo XIX entre la arquitectura realizada por los maestros de obras y el papel que estos mismos profesionales jugaron en la construcción de la ciudad burguesa. Los conflictos de competencias entre arquitectos y maestros de obras en toda España en este periodo fueron constantes, y se debieron a la falta de suficientes arquitectos titulados, que eran los que estaban realmente capacitados para desempeñar los cargos oficiales. Por esta causa, a menudo los maestros de obras ocuparon dichos puestos. También hacemos un resumen de datos biográficos y trayectoria profesional de Alejandro R. Sesmero, aportando noticias hasta ahora inéditas sobre su figura.

Trough the study of the work done by Alejandro R. Sesmero in Vigo we try to contribute to the knowledge of the relation between architecture made by masons in Galician cities during the last thirty years of the XIXth century and the roll that these professionals played in the construction of bourgeois cities. The conflicts between architects and masons in this period is also analysed in this article. During those years, the number of architects in Spain was so short that there were many masons who had to do the work that only the architects were legally able to do. We also bring forward some news about life and professional trajectory of Alejandro R. Sesmero.
