Resumen de Café, developpement et autochtonie en Nouvelle-Caledonie

Isabelle Leblic

  • English

Coffee, development and natives in New Caledonia. - The history of coffee in New Caledonia cannot be separated from colonization. The colonial administration first tired to attract colonists for planting coffee, but these efforts were detrimental to the Kanak whose lands were seized. In an attempt to integrate natives in the market economy, the administration then supported, in tribal zones, the development of coffee plantations in shaded areas and afterwards in sunny areas. Now trying to draw lessons from the past, North Province is pursuing a policy for stimulating the production of coffee based on the Kanak social organization and land ownership. The analysis of past failures must take into account the characteristics of Kanak society: native/foreign plants, conceptions of work, ideas about development and underdevelopment.
