El leísmo desde la perspectiva del "marcado diferencial del objetivo"

    El fenómeno conocido como leísmo se ha examinado desde una multiplicidad de enfoques, tanto en estudios dedicados a su funcionamiento sincrónico, como en trabajos de corte diacrónico. Aunque nuestra comprensión del fenómeno se ha beneficiado enormemente a partir de esas contribuciones, es claro que aún no disponemos de la visión de conjunto que permita explicar la red completa de sus manifestaciones.

    En este trabajo, argumentaremos que el leísmo encuentra una explicación natural cuando se analiza como reflejo, en el terreno pronominal, del fenómeno llamado "marcado diferencial del objeto", con el que también ha sido vinculado, en estudios recientes, el objeto directo preposicional del español.

    Desde esta perspectiva, se observa que determinados referentes en función de objeto directo se marcan de forma especial, y se sostiene que la razón por la que esto sucede es que poseen características que los hacen más aptos para desempeñarse como sujeto-agente, de tal modo que el papel de objeto-paciente que toman en la predicación va en contra de las expectativas.

    Mostraremos que el comportamiento global del leísmo, al igual que el del objeto directo preposicional, obedece al establecimiento de ciertos cortes que ha hecho el español en la jerarquía de potencialidad de agencia, que regula el "marcado diferencial del objeto" en las lenguas del mundo.

    Podrá constatarse que el análisis planteado desde esta perspectiva ilumina el desarrollo diacrónico del leísmo y ayuda a dar cuenta de su amplia diversidad dialectal sincrónica

    The phenomenon known as leísmo has been considered from a variety of points of view, both in studies devoted to its synchronic behavior, as well as in diachronic works. Although our understanding of the phenomenon has benefited greatly from these contributions, it is clear that we do not have the general picture yet which could account for the entire network of its manifestations.

    In this work, we will argue that leísmo finds a natural explanation when it is analyzed as the reflection, in the pronominal area, of the phenomenon called "differential object marking", also connected, in recent studies, with the prepositional direct object of Spanish.

    From this perspective, it is observed that direct objects referring to certain kinds of entities are marked in a special way, and it is claimed that the reason for this marking is that they have features which make them more apt to function as agentive subjects, so that the object-patient role they assume in the sentence is not expected.

    We will show that the general behavior of leísmo, like that of the prepositional direct object, responds to the distinctions Spanish has made on the hierarchy of agenthood, that regulates "differential object marking" in the languages of the world.

    It will be noted that the analysis carried out from this perspective illuminates the historical development of leísmo, and helps explain the dialectal variation that characterizes it synchronically.
