    El 16 de enero de 2007 se cumplen 15 años de la firma de los Acuerdos de Paz entre el Gobierno salvadoreño y el Frente “Farabundo Martí” para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN). Uno de tales acuerdos fue la conversión del FMLN a partido político. En este artículo se describen sus orígenes, su desempeño en elecciones legislativas, municipales y presidenciales, y su peso como fuerza parlamentaria y de gobierno municipal. Desde 1994 ha aumentado continuamente su caudal electoral, controla cerca de un tercio de los escaños en el Parlamento y gobierna importantes ciudades del país, incluyendo la capital. Sin embargo, el límite a su crecimiento está en el carácter urbano adoptado por el FMLN en esta nueva etapa política.

    On January 16th, 2007 it will be 15 years since the signature of the Peace Agreements between the Salvadorean Government and the Frente “Farabundo Martí” para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN). One of the Agreements was the conversion of the FMLN into a political party. In this article, the origins of this process as well as the performance of the FMLN in the legislative, municipal and presidential elections, are described, and also its weight in the Legislature and Municipal Governmet. Since 1994, the FMLN has continually increased its electoral volume, controlling almost one third of the seats in the Parliament and governing important cities of the country, including the capital. Nevertheless, the limit to its growth is in the urban character adopted by the FMLN in this new political stage.
