The first verse narratives in medieval Iberia in a romance language were probably written as grammatical or rhetorical translation exercises from latin and french sources along the Jacobean route or in some other places with Franc population, like Toledo, conquered by christians in 1085. This process did happen from mid 12th century -through the comparison of latin and french texts about chronicles, epic romances, saint¿s lives, debates, or else- to mid 13th century, when the written norm, consolidated not whithout hesitations, was called castilian by Alfonso X.
