  • Resumen
    • Objective: To analyze differences between laparoscopy and laparotomy in the management of ovarian teratomas.

Material and methods: A search was performed in our hospital records for ICD-10 code D27, as well as for ovarian teratomas between January 2000 and December 2005. A total of 147 women were studied, of which 101 underwent laparotomy and 46 underwent laparoscopy. Al1 variables related to diagnosis, operating technique, and follow-up procedures were recorded and were analyzed by using parametric and nonparametric tests when necessary.

Results: Operating times were 78.37 + 35.20 minutes for laparotomy and 91.22 + 29.85 minutes for laparoscopy (P<.05). Complications after surgery occurred in 19.8% and 8.7% (P<.05) respectively. Hospital stay was shorter in the laparoscopy group: 2.80 + 1.14 days versus 6.35 + 3.23 days (P<.05).

Conclusions: The laparoscopic approach reduces complications after surgery and the length of hospital stay. However, this approach requires longer operating time.
