    Existe un acuerdo general entre los economistas en reconocer que los servicios sanitarios, como bien de consumo presentan una serie de características que los distinguen del resto de bienes de servicios. En tanto que estas características han sido ampliamente estudiadas en los servicios sanitarios generales, se ha prestado menos atención a los servicios de salud oral. Sin embargo estos contribuyen de forma notable al conjunto del gasto sanitario. Además, la forma en que los servicios de salud oral se financian, influyen en la demanda de los pacientes y también en la forma en que se ofrecen. En este trabajo se analizan las tendencias actuales, organizativas y de financiación de los servicios de salud oral en Europa, así como la importancia de su eficiencia.

    lt has long been recognised by economists that health care, as a commodity, has a number of features that distinguish it from other goods and services. These features have led to the development of special arrangements for the finance and delivery of health care. While these special features have been analysed extensively in the case of general health care, dental health care has received less attention.

    The oral health care market is an imperfect market. One of the elements that influences the balance between supply and demand is the probable existence of a supplier induced demand (SID). Moreover, the way in which oral health services are financed influences what patients demand and how much services dentists supply. Despite the lack of literature, it has been argued that the oversupply of dental manpower might be related to the SID. The interaction of these elements in an imperfect and deregulated market, should be studied in depth. Further regulation in this field may be necessary in the future.
