The poema del Desconhort, written by Ramon Llull circa. 1295, is a dialogue between a hermit and Ramon, who despairs at his failure to convert infidels. The hermit laughs at Ramon as the latter weeps. But halfway through the text the tables are turned: Ramon has the last laugh on the hermit, on showing him the finer points of his oeuvre. Irony leads to the reassertion of Ramon Llull¿s existential experience, that of the dissemination of art, which is the ultimate revelation of Christianity. Irony thus becomes a principle of action.
