This study attempted to identify important research questions in music education as collectively expressed by experienced researchers in the United States. Music education professors at major research universities (N=24) responded to questions concerning what the most important research questions in music education were. Results are presented in five themes: nature of music education research, methodological concerns, foundational topics, specific topics, and cross-regional and international data. Results show a precedence of research quality over any list of research agenda. A three-tier model for high quality research in music education is generated to represent the importance of the five themes. The three tiers of the model are (a) basics of high quality research, (b) research topics, and (c) enrichment of understanding.
