  • Resumen
    • The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if all or a combination of the music experiences defined by the National Assessment of Educational Progress Student Music Background Questionnaire (NAEP SMBQ; Perskey, Sandene, & Askew, 1998) for Grade 8 students could produce items with sufficient reliability and a unidimensional structure to permit its use in future music research studies. Grade 8 music students (N=6,903) in 78 schools participated in the study. The results of this study indicated that a subset of items produce an instrument with a unidimensional structure and sufficient reliability for research purposes. The items associated with an adequate instrument relate to music experiences outside of school which Hedden (1982) defined as music background.
