In the Vita Nuova and in his Rime, Dante employs two words to describe light: luce and lume. To many modern readers, these may appear to be synonymous. Contextual examination, however, suggests that Dante distinguished between the two, based on classical and medieval philosophical writings on the nature light and its components. In his poetic works other than the Commedia, Dante appears to employ luce and lume consistently in accordance with these philosophical distinctions.
Nonetheless, Dante uses both terms creatively, in order to emphasize the nature of his poetic subject.

Nella Vita nuova e nelle Rime, Dante utilizza due voci che a prima vista sembrano sinonime a molti lettori moderni: luce e lume. Un esame contestuale, però, suggerisce che Dante fa distinzione tra i due vocaboli, in base a distinzioni stabilite da scritti filosofici dell�antichità e del medioevo sulla natura dell�illuminazione e dei suoi componenti. Nelle sue opere poetiche (senza considerare la Commedia) sembra che Dante scelga luce e lume in un modo coerente secondo le distinzioni filosofiche. Tuttavia, Dante usa entrambe le voci in maniera creativa per sottolineare la natura del suo soggetto poetico.
