  • The role of Spanish diplomacy in the process toward the independence of Texas has hardly been studied by historians until today. Though, at first, this role might seem a marginal one, two elements have helped to enhance the role of the Spanish ambassdor in Washington. First of all, Spain had been the colonial power of the territories in dispute; besides, the plenipotentiary Spanish minister was an old friend of the Menean special envoy in Washington. These circumstances will make of the Spanish diplomatic representative, Mr. Ángel Calderón de la Barca, an interesting character
