The role of Spanish diplomacy in the process toward the independence of Texas has hardly been studied by historians until today. Though, at first, this role might seem a marginal one, two elements have helped to enhance the role of the Spanish ambassdor in Washington. First of all, Spain had been the colonial power of the territories in dispute; besides, the plenipotentiary Spanish minister was an old friend of the Menean special envoy in Washington.
