  • When referring to cinema, the Orient is neither a continent, a language nor a common culture.

    Starting with seven films by Tsai-Ming Liang, Nobuhiro Suwa, Abbas Kiarostami, Apitchatpong Weerasethakul, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Jia Zhangke and Wang Bing, the article travels around the country that does not exist on any map and that fails to describe its otherness or exotic land, yet reveals its proximity: the extreme thing here is not the fruit of a breakdown but the prolongation of a history which in the West has been interrupted and picked up again by a few filmmakers to whom distance lightens the burden of tradition. This is the root of its radical nature. the unusual trust in the cinema and its powers:
