Som a l�any del centenari de l�Institut d�Estudis Catalans. La revista Estudis Romànics ha volgut participar en els actes commemoratius d�una manera que potser algú trobarà molt particular, però que desitgem que sigui tan efectiva com particular. Es tracta d�oferir als romanistes que s�interessen per la cultura catalana i que són conscients que els manca informació que els faciliti d�introduir-s�hi amb eficàcia, un resum de la feina feta per l�Institut en el seu primer segle d�existència, en el camp de les lletres (llengua, lingüística i història de la literatura). Atès que la seva vida ha estat prou atzarosa, l�exposició de l�obra que ha dut a terme l�Institut és projectada en unes nocions elementals sobre la seva història, de 1907 fins a 2007.

This year marks the centenary of the «Institut d�Estudis Catalans». It is the wish of the journal Estudis Romànics to participate in the celebration in a way which some may find rather special; however, we hope that it will not only be special but also successful. We would like to offer Romance scholars interested in Catalan culture, but who lack the means to fully integrate into the field, a summary of the work carried out by the «Institut» in its first century of existence in the area of Arts (language, linguistics and history of literature). Since it has had many ups and downs, the work of the «Institut» must needs be expounded against the backdrop of some elementary notions of its history from 1907 to 2007.
