On the basis of participant observation, this article consists of notes on the way food distribution by volunteers is carried out in an office of the Secours catholique (a catholic charity). It is shown how the volunteers understanding of their catholic duty is implicitly based on the notion of traditional charity whereas what they explicitly talk about is how to reinsert the people they help into normal life. The problem they face is how to give meaning to the traditional practice of catholic volunteers in this sort of association: giving food to the hungry while what would seem more relevant would be to coax people back into professional life through working together with professional social workers.

Cet article fait part de quelques réflexions sur les conditions de distribution de la nourriture par des personnes bénévoles, à partir d'une observation participante menée durant un an dans une permanence du Secours catholique. Les bénévoles qui ouvrent dans cette association sont catholiques, et se réfèrent donc implicitement aux notions de charité et de compassion chrétienne, alors qu'explicitement ils se réfèrent à celle d'insertion sociale. Quel sens peut avoir aujourd'hui le fait de donner à manger aux pauvres pour des catholiques engagés dans une association caritative, alors que l'on tente de les former au management et qu'ils doivent articuler leur action à celle des professionnels du social ?
