Resumen de Don Manuel de Sentmenat y el Virreinato de Mallorca (1681-1688). La labor política y militar

En el presente trabajo hemos pretendido reflejar la labor política y militar desarro- llada por el noble catalán don Manuel de Sentmenat en el virreinato de Mallorca entre 1681 y 1688. Unos años difíciles, marcados por la agresividad de Luis XIV de Francia, lo que obli- gará a la Monarquía Hispánica a procurar enmendar en la medida de sus posibilidades el es- tado defensivo de sus territorios, en este caso las Baleares, al tiempo que procurará extraer de dichos territorios todo el caudal y los hombres posibles para emplearlos en la defensa común de la Monarquía. Por otro lado, la correspondencia entre el virrey Sentmenat y el gobernador de Menorca y, más tarde, de Ibiza en dicho período, don Juan Bayarte, muy sugestiva intelec- tualmente, creemos que es muy importante al permitirnos entender mejor las capacidades del virrey estudiado.

In the present work we have tried to reflect the political and military work devel- oped by the Catalan nobleman Don Manuel de Sentmenat in its Majorcan destiny between 1681 and 1688. The well-known aggressiveness of Luis XIV of France during these years will force the Hispanic Monarchy to try to improve in the measurement of its possibilities the defensive state of its territories, in this case the Balearic ones, to the time that it will try to extract of these territories all the volume and the men possible to use them in the common defence of the Monarchy. On the other hand, the correspondence between the viceroy Sent- menat and the governor of Minorca and, later, of Ibiza in the above mentioned period, don Juan Bayarte, very suggestive intellectually, we believe that it is very important to allow us to understand better the capacities of the studied viceroy.
