  • In the second chapter, the heroes turn their country residence into a farm, and fail. Flaubert had asked an 1870s state agronomist to describe what two Parisians becoming farmers would have done in 1840 ; his plot follows this document, and turns on a main, unstated fact — that the heroes could not have known.
