  • Josephine and her people's language a) is not quite a language b) is anyway inaccessible to us. How does Kafka relate this ? Well, Josephine the Singer doesn't speak — but nor does she so much « sing » as « have an effect » « as if she sung ». Thus does Kafka write of the artist's words in relation to the language of the people.
