Goethe is both absent and present in Heidegger. Absent as poet, except inasmuch as a master of German; present as prose writer, inasmuch as his nature writings resist overly rational approaches; in all, his metaphysical poetry is never commented for its meaning precisely because it considers man part of nature, the metaphysical error par excellence for Heidegger.
