• Perec's title suggests a story inscribed in time, while the novel describes a building at the moment one of its inhabitants dies. The project is to say both movement and stasis, continuity and discontinuity, time and space, a project in which the structure of the book and its self-imposed constraints find their logic. Not that that is surprising.
