The sublime is, according to Jean-Luc Nancy, our tradition since Boileau's translation of the pseudo-Longinus, and Giono inscribes himself within it. But for him and his characters the sublime is not transcendental, if it is an aspiration to be on high — it is a material, sensual sublime, in Stendhal's manner, a sublime which can be grasped by the human hand.
