  • Resumen
    • Robin Chazdon and the late Tim Whitmore, along with their editorial board, have done a great service to tropical forest science by collecting over 50 foundation papers in an anthology that is accessible and valuable to everyone, from professional biologist to lay rainforest aficionado. I especially valued the inclusion of excerpts of the writings of some of the early naturalists and explorers of the 16th–19th centuries, from von Humboldt onward. These early perspectives are rarely included in anthologies of scientific papers, and yet they are particularly relevant to an anthology of foundation writings about tropical forests. Many of the early impressions and observations of these pioneering naturalists have since proven to be remarkably accurate. Darwin is absent from this pantheon, but his inland forays during the voyage of The Beagle did not expose him much to tropical moist forests.
