The Equator Initiative (http://www.equatorinitiative.org.) announced the winners of the Equator Prize 2002 at an awards ceremony held at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) during August 2002. These prizes recognize community initiatives throughout the tropics for their work to reduce poverty whilst conserving and using biodiversity sustainably. Out of 420 nominations, 27 winners (each awarded US$30 000) were announced (http://nature.org/pressroom/press/press752.html).
