  • Resumen
    • The article gives an account of the interlocking histories of television in Spain and the life of Francisco Franco. On one hand, general Franco played a decisive role in getting television going in Spain, yet on the other, it is highly curious that the world created in the television programs provided a virtual education in the rules of modernity and consumption—clearly at odds with the ideals of a military man molded by extremely conservative norms and who used his dictatorial power outside of democratic standards. At another level, the article considers a typically overlooked issue, that is, how a chief of state makes television a leisure activity and how he manipulates the mise-en-scene of his newyear television address.
