  • The article examines the representation of Franco in Madregilda (Francisco Regueiro, 1994). A sentimental tone surrounds the rhetorical trope of “waste”—a connecting theme throughout Regueiro’s film. This theme reflects how the identity of the Caudillo is structured as an enigma whose key lies lost in a previous time, and can only be recovered through a nostalgic stance. The rhetorical trope is carried over into the ideological implications of this particular image of Franco, especially in relation to the intellectual scene of 1990s Spain.
