El proceso de transición en Chile ha sido influenciado por las características particulares que tuvo la intervención militar durante el período 1973-1990. Tanto el origen de la acción militar que genera el término del Gobierno del presidente Allende; como el carácter del ejercicio del Gobierno militar y finalmente, el sello del tránsito a la democracia han permitido que las Fuerzas Armadas hayan contribuido a la consolidación de la democracia, sin constituirse en actores de la política contingente. En particular el Ejército, además recuperó la confianza, el respeto y el cariño de todos los sectores. Adicionalmente no hay duda de la subordinación al poder político. Generó un cambio doctrinario, organizacional y educativo que provocó una transformación de la función militar adecuada a la realidad del siglo XXI y al término de la guerra fría. Todo lo anterior hace que se le perciba como una institución vocacional, profesional y eficiente que es fundamental para el Estado y que alcanza los primeros niveles en toda encuesta que refleje estos factores

The transitional process in Chile has been ¡nfluenced by the particular characteristics of the military intervention from 1973-1990. The origin ofthe military action that brought President Allende's government to an end; the characteristics of the military government and finally, the distinctiveness of the transition to democracy have allowed the Armed Forces to contribute to the Consolidation of democracy, without constituting themselves as political actors. In particular, the Army has recovered its reputation, and the respect and proximity of the people. Additionally, there is no question of its subordination to the political authority. The Army generated a shift in doctrine, organization and education that allowed a transformation ofthe military s role, appropriate for the realities ofthe 21" Century and the post Cold War world. All of the above permits the Army to be perceived as professional, efficient, and a fundamental institution ofthe State which is highly ranked in all surveys that measure these factors
