Se analiza el concepto de ciclo geológico en James Hutton (1726-1795) y su relación ineludible con el tiempo profundo. Ambas ideas pertenecen realmente al mito del eterno retorno, y tras el estudio de su origen y desarrollo histórico, desde las tradiciones orientales, pasando por el mundo grecolatino, la Edad Media, y el Renacimiento, hasta la Ilustración, aparecen como recurrentes en la historia del pensamiento.
The concept of geological cycle in James Hutton (1726-1795) is analysed, being in an essential relation to the deep time. Both ideas concern actually the myth of the Eternal Return, and they are to become recurrent ideas in history of the older human thought after studying their origin and historical development, from the eastern traditions, through the Greek-Latin culture, the Middle Age, and the Renaissance, to the Enlightenment.
