  Descripción del camino por el cual se intenta llegar a un conocimiento de la sucesión cronoestratigráfica global a través del establecimiento de sucesiones estratigráficas locales. Un elemento importante es la definición correcta de las sucesiones estratigráficas tipo teniendo en cuenta las normas dictadas por la “International Stratigraphic Guide” y también el “North American Stratigraphic Code”. Como ejemplo se analiza la historia de la sucesión estratotípica del Ilerdiense. Un apéndice recoge las etimologías de los unidades cronoestratigráficas aceptadas universalmente.

  The paper describes how to approach an understanding of global chronostratigraphic succession by establishing local stratigraphic successions. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the correct definition of the stratigraphic type-sections according to the rules of the “International Stratigraphic Guide” and the “North American Stratigraphic Code”. The history of the statotypic section of the Ilerdian is analysed as an example. A list of the etymology of the chronostratigraphic units that are universally accepted is given in an appendix.
