Orígenes y trayectoria de la familia genovesa Centurione Becchignone y su vinculación a España (1360-1525)

    Por las Cruzadas los genoveses se hicieron navegantes, mercaderes y constructores de naves. Finalizadas aquéllas, incrementaron estas actividades y los Becchignone y otras ocho familias nobles se agruparon creando un poderoso grupo financiero, naval y mercantil al que llamaron albergo Centurione.

    El Archivio di Stato di Genova nos muestra los viajes comerciales efectuados por esta familia hacia Levante, y los archivos de Aragón, Mallorca, Valencia, Sevilla y Málaga nos revelan:

    1.º El importante papel desempeñado por Mallorca como depósito comercial de Génova entre el Mediterráneo oriental y el Atlántico norte;

    2º El soporte económico prestado por los genoveses al condestable Pedro de Portugal, rey intruso de Cataluña;

    3º El rechazo genovés a la Reconquista, pues suponía la pérdida del comercio con los musulmanes de Granada y Berbería;

    4º El surgimiento de una saga de banqueros castellano-genoveses al servicio del Emperador, nietos del primer factor del albergo Centurione en Mallorca.

    At the time of the Crusades, the Genoans became seafarers, merchants and shipwrights. After the time of the Crusades, these activities increased and the Becchignones, together with eight other noble families, formed a powerful financial, naval and mercantile group called Albergo Centurione.

    Genoan archives report the trading voyages of this family towards the Levant, and archives of Aragon, Majorca, Valencia, Seville and Malaga reveal: a) The important part played by Majorca as a trading post for Genoa between the eastern Mediterranean and the north Atlantic.

    b) The economic support given by the Genoans to the «Condestable» Peter of Portugal, usurper of the throne of Catalonia.

    c) The rejection on the part of the Genoese towards the Reconquist, as that supposed the loss of trade with the moors in Granada and on the Barbary Coast.

    d) The rise of a generation of Castilian-Genoan bankers in the service of the Emperor, gransons of the first factor in Majorca of de Albergo Centurione.
