La ingeniería ha producido a lo largo de toda su historia obras muy buenas, no solo en cuanto a sus características resistentes y de ejecución, sino que además muy bellas, hasta el extremo de poder ser consideradas como obras de arte, dentro del contexto con lo que actualmente se pude referir a las obras de arquitectura. Se pasa revista a las tres manifestaciones más claras del quehacer ingenieril, carreteras, presas y puentes, destacando su valor formal, configurador de una nueva familia de objetos, respuesta de un riguroso enfrentamiento con lo resistente en el terreno de las obras públicas. La instalación de la carretera en el terreno, configurando el territorio es responsabilidad de los ingenieros de caminos, y a él debemos responder con todo nuestro talento.

Engineering has produced very good works throughout its history, not only in terms of their strength characteristics and construction, but also in terms of beauty and to the point where they may be considered as works of art when taken in the context currently employed to refer to works of architecture. The article reviews three of the clearest manifestations of engineering work: roads, dams and bridges, underlining the formal value of these works which shape a new order of objects as a result of rigorous confrontation with the merely resistant in the field of public works. The laying of a road in the landscape and the ensuing configuration of territory is the responsibility of civil engineers and one which we should respond with all our talent.
