The main object of this paper is classifying the prerequisites required for a candidate to attain the consulate. Framed within Cicero's theory of action, it is a structural analysis where it is concluded that there are three: the titles of lineage, the merits due to actions, and the trust in public opinion. Once the classification has been established, the paper is focused on the merits-trust binomial and stresses its meaning and interest nowadays, such as it stated in the papers on justice by Michael Walzer.
