Ubicado en el debate reciente en el seno de la historiografía mexicana sobre el uso del concepto región y la viabilidad de la historia regional, el presente artículo busca responder al cuestionamiento de que, siendo presa de la polisemia y el empirismo, esta última parece carecer de elementos teóricos y metodológicos que la sustenten. Por ello, incursiona en el origen moderno del concepto, en los elementos inherentes a una región para ser asumida como tal desde la disciplina histórica yen la existencia de al menos tres tipos de región (temático, histórico y de coyuntura). Finalmente, señala que la historia regional permite comprender tanto el surgimiento y las etapas de transformación política, económica y territorial propias de las regiones como la gestación y el nacimiento del Estado-nación al que ahora pertenecen. Ésa es la razón por la que pueden ser comparables a nivel hispanoamericano.

Set in the context of the recent debate at the heart of Mexican historiography on the use of the concept region and the viability of regional history, this article seeks to answer the question of whether, trapped by polysemy and empiricism, the latter appears to lack the theoretical and methodological elements that support it. It therefore explores the modern origin of the concept and the elements a region must contain for it to be regarded as such from the discipline of history and the existence of at least three types of region (thematic, historical and conjunctural). Finally, it points out that regional history can include both the emergence and the political, economic and territorial stages of transformation characteristic of regions, such as the gestation and birth of the nation-state to which they now belong. This is the reason why they can be compared at the Latín Amerlcan level.
