Els problemes dels drets humans es plantegen avui, molt sovint, d'una manera diferent de com es feia durant la postguerra. En aquells temps, davant la crisi de valors que visqué Europa, es va iniciar una molt seriosa reflexió sobre els límits del comportament humà que finalment es va veure materializada en la redacció de la Declaració universal deis drets humans. Els temps, peró, han canviat molt des de llavors i l'esperit d'unió davant els problemes que ens envolten sembla que ha estat substituït per l'enfrontament entre les poténcies per aconseguir l'hegemonia interpretativa sobre el que signifiquen els drets humans. El resultat d'aquesta lluita hermenéutica ha estat la penosa fragmentació del missatge de la Declaració. Així, sota el perill d'una creixent incomprensió entre els pobles i les dificultats d'una governabilitat democrática de la globalització, l'article descriu el procés que va precedir la Declaració universal deis drets humans i el paper clau que jugà el consell de savis per a l'aprovació del text final. Tot recuperant la mirada de Maritain, filósof que va influenciar molt en el desenvolupament del text, Roberto Papini defensa que cal actualitzar l'esperit fonamental de la Declaració, i que aixó passa per anar més enllà deis interessos particulars de les nacions.

The human rights problems are frequently set out today in a different way to how they were set out during the post-war period. In those days, in view of the values crisis existing in Europe, a very serious reflection on the limits of the human behaviour began which finally materialised in the writing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Times have changed very much since then and the spirit of union before the problems around us seems to have been replaced by the confrontation between the powerful nations to achieve the interpretative hegemony on the significance of human rights. The result of this hermeneutics fight has been the awful fragmenta-don of the Declaration 's message. Therefore, under the danger of a growing lack of understanding among the people and the difficulties of a democratic governance of globalisation, the article describes the process which preceded the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the key role played by the wise men committee for the approval of the final text. By recovering the approach of Maritain, a philosopher who had a strong influence in the development of the text, Papini defends the need to update the fundamental spirit of the Declaration and this comes about by going beyond the nations' particular interests.
