Located in the Spanish city of Oviedo, the College of San Gregorio is a hall of residence for university students whose origins can be traced back to 1534. In spite of this, the formal foundation of the establishment would not happen until twenty-three years later. In 1557, the one-time Inquisitor General Fernando de Valdés made his will commAnding of the hall of residence. It was to be placed in a plot of land he owned near the Naranco mount, in the north-west of the town. In 1612, the Statutes of the institution were officially published. Even though the building was refurbished in 1746, by the early 19th century it was in very poor and bad condition. For that reason, the government ordered its reutilization as barracks for the Spanish militia. Afterwards, the building would house the Escuela Normal de Maestros of Oviedo and was bought later on by private individuals. Then, it was demolished and rebuilt to be adapted as a bank. In 1942, after the Spanish civil war, a decree was published in order to create a new hall of residence, which still offers its services to students nowadays.
