El historiador realiza cortes y balances periódicos de su propia actividad profesional; por ende este texto puede asumirse como un ajuste de cuentas. Las circunstancias que prevalecieron en el mundo a partir de los años sesenta, conllevaron un verdadero reto para las nuevas generaciones de historiadores que no se conformaron con seguir construyendo historias convencionales. Era menester afrontar nuevos objetivos, sin soslayar discrepancias y revalorar el compromiso del oficio de historiar. Se pretendió una tarea más libre, para fortalecer el sentido de trascendencia y con ello recuperar el pasado, a partir de un permanente ejercicio mnemotécnico, entendido como desafío y combate permanente por la historia.

The historian introduces periodically cuts and balances in his o her own activity; this text can be seen therefore as a settling of accounts. The circumstances prevailing in the world since the 1960's posed a real challenge for the new generations of historians who where not satisfied with just continuing to construct conventional histories. It was necessary to tackle new goals, without sidestepping discrepancies, and revaluing the commitment with the trade of recounting history. A freer task was sought to strengthen the sense of transcendence and retrieve in this way thee past through a permanent mnemonic practice, conceived as a challenge and a permanent battle for history.
