Gran lector de los clásicos griegos y latinos, Michel de Montaign e redactó sus Ensayos con un estilo personal y un tono moderno, pero recordando repetidamente en múltiples citas y en muchos de sus temas y reflexiones a sus autores preferidos, como Séneca y Plutarco, que podemos considerar como precursores del nuevo género literario. (También podemos citar a Fray Antonio de Guevara en ese contexto humanista).

Great reader of the Latin and Greek classics, Michel de Montaigne wrote his Essays in a very personal style and showing a very modern insight, but always remembering among others- his most beloved ancient authors, Seneca and Plutarch, in his well selected and so frequent quotations of so many themes and thoughts. From this point of view we can consider these ancient writers as the forerunners of the new literary genre. (And in this context we can also mention the writings of Fray Antonio de Guevara).
