  • Many of the new areas of scientific research yield large amount of complex data (microarray, images, etc.) that can not be analysed using standard parametric models. Smoothing techniques provied a flexible framework for modelling these type of data. In this paper we focus on a recent and very atractive approach in the context of smoothing methods: penalized splines.
