    Al analizar el comportamiento de Siria entre 1996 y 2006, se busca entender cómo se manifiesta y oscila la voluntad de poder y cuáles son los elementos que la nutren. Con base en una división por ciclos, se observa la manera en la que Siria reformula y adapta su poder mediante una distribución diferente de recursos. Para ello se analizan simultáneamente dos dimensiones de su política exterior, la estratégica-militar y la subjetiva. El caso sirio muestra cómo los instrumentos tradicionales del poder conservan su importancia, pero que su campo de uso se restringe a la vez que nuevos elementos del ámbito social e inmaterial (asociados a discursos, imágenes, símbolos) con mayor frecuencia sirven a Damasco para influir en la audiencia interna y transnacional, así como para negociar. Analizar las oscilaciones y motivaciones en la voluntad de poder de Siria permite, de esta forma, establecer y entender la brecha que existe entre los medios de los que este país árabe dispone y sus ambiciones estratégicas.

    By analyzing Syria's behavior between 1996 and 2006, the author seeks to understand how the will for power manifests itself and fluctuates, and what factors nourish it. Dividing the period into cycles shows the way in which Syria reformulates and adapts its power by distributing its resources differently. Thus, two dimensions of its foreign-policy are analyzed simultaneously: strategic-military and subjective. The Syrian case shows that traditional instruments of power retain their importance but the scope of their use is restricted, while new features in the social and non-material sphere (associated with political discourse, images, symbols) increasingly serve Damascus to influence audiences locally and abroad, as well as in negotiations. Analyzing the oscillations and motivations in Syria's will for power helps us realize and understand the gap between the means at this Arab country's disposal and its strategic ambitions.
