The unexpected victory of the left in Paris in 2001 has altered the political map in Île-de-France. The collapse of the old local political power bases – the Chiracian stronghold in Paris and the “red suburbs” – and the Grand Paris project have changed the dynamics of the relationship between the city that lies at the centre of the region and the suburbs that surround it. The capital is slowly emerging from its former political isolation. Nonetheless, it still remains peculiar in that its voting trends are going against what can be seen in the region as a whole : support for the right is declining in Paris, while slowly increasing over time in the suburbs. Above all, Paris is still a major political battleground that is keenly contested by all the main parties. Control of the city is important both in the national political landscape and because its conquest is fundamental for any party wishing to control the rich and coveted Territorial Collectivities, the region of Île-de-France and the new metropolitan structure currently being put in place.

La victoire inédite de la gauche à Paris en 2001 a modifié la géopolitique francilienne. L'effondrement des puissants systèmes politiques locaux le fief chiraquien parisien et la banlieue rouge et le projet de Grand Paris ont permis d'établir de nouvelles relations entre la ville-centre et la banlieue. La capitale sort donc lentement de l'isolement politique qui la caractérisait. Néanmoins, elle conserve sa singularité en développant des comportements électoraux à contre-courant de l'espace régional : la droite décline intra-muros, alors que sur le long terme elle progresse lentement dans les espaces de banlieue. Surtout, Paris demeure un territoire politique exceptionnel âprement disputé entre les grands partis à toutes les échelles. Le contrôle de la ville est un enjeu géopolitique national et sa conquête est fondamentale pour contrôler des collectivités territoriales riches et convoitées, la région Île-de-France et la structure métropolitaine en gestation.
