The aim of this paper is to detect the distinctive resources and practices of long-and deep-rooted family businesses in the Historic Territory of Alava, proposing some recommendations regarding the organizational structure, communication mechanisms, remuneration policy, protection of business and family assets, and the management and ownership succession. In short, we would like to define and articulate ways to support family businesses in Álava, with the aim of reducing, as much as possible, the threat of extinction, basically when the generational change in the business management occurs.
